Frequently Asked Questions

What is Signo?

Signo is a corporation that serves as a partner for professional individuals, professional governing/regulating bodies and small services firms. It follows an integrative philosophy that brings together different areas and services that drive professional career success. Signo promotes professionalism and professional value (form ethics, to functional online presence, good practice management and more)

What is SignoPro?

SignoPro stands for Signo Professional. A Signo Professional could be anyone in the ‘helping skills’ and knowledge services industry. These include Coaches, Psychologists, Doctors, Lawyers, OD and HR practitioners, Religious Ministers, and Academics.

What is the value offering?

Signo is committed to building the integrity and brand of SignoPro into a recognised mark of professionalism and value to the extent that it distinguishes the Signo Professional from others. We focus on assisting and developing professionals and in turn those professionals carry the brand of Signo. Listing only the general areas of value Signo deals with Expertise, Communication, and Management: Signo advances Expertise and Knowledge, acquire the structures and functionality for web development, assists in practice and life management. Signo acquires critical resources, develops or networks with partners and makes these resources available at various membership levels.

Is Signo a professional or governing body?

The names Signo and SignoPro are not professional governing bodies as such. Signo does however, actively advance collaborative practice and will be involved in certification processes in future. Many governing bodies are not formally tied into government structures. Signo is currently hosting a number of credentialing levels and the aim is to tie into government structures globally. In addition to collaborative practice that Signo advances its purpose is to also assist in building the professional credibility of other approaches and act as a host corporation strengthening the standard of professional excellence of governing bodies that want to associate.

What is collaborative practice?

Collaborative practice is a body of ideas (touching on ethics, epistemology, methodology and attitude) that inform work with people and particularly the skilled helping or interaction modalities. As a body of ideas it informs many interaction modalities from coaching, to counseling and facilitation irrespective of the domain (family, organisations and more). One can either be a collaborative practitioner coach (counselor etc.) or be a coach (counselor etc.) informed pertinently by collaborative ideas. On the other hand, beyond interaction modalities (or then helping as a skill) one finds more knowledge oriented professions such as doctors and lawyers but who fully start to recognise the value of seeking more collaboratively informed sustainable solutions. There are a number of approaches that indeed runs close to collaborative practice, such as narrative coaching (therapy etc.), appreciate inquiry, some strengths based approaches – generally several more postmodern inclined practices.

What is the difference between credentialed and independent practitioners.

Credentialed practitioners (IMAGO therapists, NLP coaches, IAF facilitators, Requisite OD specialists and others) are members of a professional/governing body or at least community of practice and are credentialed at a certain level and standard. Independent practitioners on the other hand could be fly by nights or someone with vast experience. Regrettably (not referring to lawyers and doctors but indeed the skilled helping industry) there is no principle or certificate whereby a credentialed member is necessarily better or more equipped than an independent practitioner. (But come to think of it, even a doctor could merely have passed with 50% and they’d have an advanced degree to show for it). What makes human behaviour difficult is that there is also the matter of personal fit. What could be a life changing experience to one client could be seen as an absolute waste of time to another. The role of Signo as a corporation, particularly then in matters of collaborative practice and related approaches, is to enhance professionalism of everyone who works as professional in the helping industry. This is where we assist professional governing bodies by making select services available to their own members at various membership levels. While we cannot be a governing body for say, IMAGO therapists, those therapists who hold Signo Professional membership stands a lot to lose in monetary terms for not upholding ethical and professional standards of their own host regulatory body.

What does membership entail and what are the levels?

Firstly, membership is only open to skilled helping and process and knowledge intensive professionals. Membership involves a yearly fee that gives members access to greatly cost reduced, value enhanced services related to expertise development, web development and practice and life management (insurance, office automation etc.). The membership levels include, STANDARD, ADVANCED, and ELITE membership. These are for independent practitioners but note that these levels have nothing to do with credentialing. Then there is a level exclusively for credentialed practitioners (Collaborative with Signo or any other formal association or governing body), namely DISTINGUISHED that offers the most benefits. There is also a TRIAL and STUDENT membership.

What are the credentialing possibilities?

There are four levels. Note that the first two (affiliate and associate) are not strictly credentialed.

Affiliate Signo Professional
All independent practitioners and membership STANDARD, ADVANCED or ELITE are automatically Affiliate Signo Professionals. They subscribe in general to professional practice but do not necessarily set out to follow collaborative ideas. So also can DISTINGUISHED members, in other words a Master NLP coach registered with the NLP governing body be an Affiliate Signo Professional.)

Associate Signo Professional
The associate level aims to inculcate collaborative ideas in addition to general professional standards and value. Approaches that relate to, and can indicate how they express collaborative ideas could already qualify as Associate Signo Professionals, such as Narrative Therapists, Collaborative Lawyers and Doctors. This level also has it as a significant priority to recognise prior experience and cultivate standards within a particular time frame.

Certified Signo Professional
This level caters for Collaborative Practitioners or Coaches (Counselors, Facilitators and so on) who pertinently follow collaborative ideas. Certified Professionals have done a programme specifically aimed at collaborative ideas. It is also open to related approaches where such practitioners can prove extensive on-point experience as credentialed members of such an external governing body.

Master Signo Professional
Master Signo Professionals have a thorough understanding of the theory and practice of their craft. They are either enrolled in at least a relevant masters degree programme or have predefined number of hours or a portfolio that can be assessed along with client testimonies attesting to collaborative and related relevant skills.

How do I become a Signo Professional?

Any membership level automatically triggers the Affiliate Signo Professional status.
There are various programmes and processes that cater for the other levels. Please inquire.

What does it cost?

Various pages deal with costs. Start here.

Are there terms and conditions?

The respective services have their own terms and conditions.

I want to remain independent (not credentialed anywhere) can I use your services?

Yes, you may. We recognise that there are many independent practitioners. Some just aren’t yet credentialed though have lots of experience while others actually do not want to be credentialed. Here is one example: A person is an academic and is involved at a very high level in a particular subject that relates (leadership, coaching, and so on). By virtue of their high level involvement they do not have the amount of time that other members have for doing actual coaching. This does not mean they are not good at coaching, they are after all directly involved in skills development, strengthening the industry or other areas. They might feel that credentialing is not going to really benefit them. The important part to us, who wants to nurture expertise, value, and professionalism is that a person subscribes to a community of both knowledge and practice (physical or virtual). We offer such a community. But beyond that, ultimately it is not about whether you have a piece of paper or not but can you do the job, and do it well. The community, training offerings and so on offers a framework for building credibility (credentialed or independent). So by virtue of affiliating or associating as a Signo Professional the Signo mark is still there for you to use in relation to any of the membership levels. Do note however that should there be complaints of some sorts that are valid we reserve the right to temporarily suspend a person’s membership.
